Intensive Treatment Foster Care

Since 1997, Aspiranet’s Intensive Treatment Foster Care (ITFC) Program has placed severely emotionally disturbed children with foster families willing to care for them. These specially trained families provide a stable alternative to institutional care for children who need a home-based treatment program with enriched support services. The program supports foster parents with effective therapeutic intervention that assures each child’s treatment is goal directed, outcome specific, and behaviorally oriented. The benefit is a long-term foster home placement with intensive counseling, case management, education, and the support services needed to create a nurturing environment for children to thrive. • Weekly individual and/or group therapy
• In-home behavioral support
• Round-the-clock emergency response plan;

• Medication assessments, testing, and emergency response;
• Immediate access to mental health professionals
• Treatment plans within the first 30 days

Hundreds of youth are currently residing in group homes across the state that would thrive in a family setting with experienced resource parents. Multi-Dimensional Foster Care Treatment (MTFC) is different from standard foster parenting in that it is shorter term, and provides support for families willing to offer their homes to teens with special needs. They may have a history of behavior problems such as law violations, school failure, aggression, drug or alcohol use, poor peer relations, poor coping and social skills, low self esteem, or foster care placements that did not work out. This six-to-nine-month program helps teens decrease negative behaviors and discover newfound success at home, in school, and in their communities. MTFC uses a unique teamwork approach with the goal of reuniting teens with their families within a short period of time. Through this program, a caring team assists these teens develop positive social behaviors, life skills, and higher self-esteem so that they can better adjust to his family, community, and peers.

How it Works

Teens are supported by their foster family, MTFC Program Supervisor, an individual therapist, and an individual skills coach. They are consistently supervised as they work on their individualized plan each day. The team measures their progress and helps them transition through the program’s points and level system.

The amount of children who are removed from their homes each day due to abusive or neglectful circumstances is astonishing. Being removed from the one place they have come to know can be traumatic, and for those with the added concern of a developmental disability, can be even more disorienting.

In California, nearly 68,000 children under the age of 18 are in foster care and about 500,000 children are in placement nationwide. While the number of foster care homes has been diminishing over time, there are still thousands, some with developmental disabilities, in the state who are in need of permanent, loving homes. Support Partners Program offers encouragement and resources to families wanting to care for these children who require special attention.

According to the Department of Health and Human Services, developmental disabilities are a diverse group of severe chronic conditions that are due to mental and/or physical impairments. These developmental disabilities often cause those affected to have problems with major life activities such as language, learning, mobility, and even independent living. Raising a child with a developmental disability can be an intricate process, so we partner foster families with social workers, aides, therapists, physicians, attorneys, and possibly birth family members.

Aspiranet is always looking for compassionate and loving foster families who are open to supporting children with developmental disabilities. Serving Santa Clara, Monterey, San Benito, Santa Cruz, and Ventura Counties, we have had great success implementing the Support Partners Program.
